Autac’s David Lowe to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in memory of sister-in-law and in aid of Prevent Breast Cancer
On 6 September, David Lowe, Managing Director of family-run Macclesfield-based cable manufacturer Autac, will begin a gruelling six-day trek up Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for Prevent Breast Cancer.
For David, this climb is more than reaching Africa’s highest peak. It’s a heartfelt tribute to his late sister-in-law, Julie Wright, who passed away in 2013 at 51 years old after a four-year battle with breast cancer. Julie was the sister of Sallie Lowe, David’s wife and Autac co-owner, and her memory continues to inspire the family’s determination to make a difference.
David is no stranger to extraordinary fundraising challenges. He has previously trekked to Everest Base Camp (2019, raising £11,016) and crossed part of the Sahara Desert (2022, raising £14,616), proving his commitment to going the distance for causes close to his heart.
“Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the UK, more than 55,900 people are diagnosed every year, that’s 153 every day,” said David. “Tragically, it still claims over 11,500 lives annually. For us, that’s 11,500 too many. We can’t change the past, but through prevention, research and awareness, we can help change the future.”
Unlike many charities that focus on treatment, Prevent Breast Cancer is the only UK charity dedicated entirely to prevention. Its vision is clear: stop breast cancer before it starts.
Backed by colleagues, friends and family, David is ready to take on this epic challenge in Julie’s memory and support life-changing research.
